  • Geographic Landscape: Spanning 2,433 square kilometers, Katete sits on a plateau (800–1000m altitude) marked by dramatic granite outcrops. The most iconic landmark is Mphangwe Hill, which rises to approximately 1,600 meters above sea level. The district’s terrain transitions from woodland in the north to fertile, yet erosion-prone, farmland in the south along the Mozambique border.
  • Infrastructure & Connectivity: The district serves as a vital transit hub. It sits at the junction of the Great East Road (T4) and the T6 road, which leads to the Chanida Border with Mozambique. Ongoing Public-Private Partnership (PPP) projects are currently rehabilitating the 55km Katete-Chanida road to boost regional trade.
  • Economic Strategy (Vision 2030): Katete's development is guided by a vision to create an agriculture-driven and competitive economy by 2030. Key strategies include:
    • Value Addition: Establishing agro-processing facilities, such as the Eastern Tropical Fruit processing plant, to move beyond basic farming.
    • Diversification: Reducing reliance on rain-fed maize by promoting varied crops and irrigation systems.
    • Local Empowerment: Utilizing the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) to build schools, health facilities (like the major St. Francis Hospital), and provide bursaries for youth.
  • Cultural & Social Identity: Katete is the headquarters of the Chewa Royal Establishment, making it a significant cultural center for the Chewa people across Zambia, Malawi, and Mozambique. As of the 2022 census, the district supports a growing population of over 214,000 people.
